The US Department of Energy just announced a bold “AI + electricity” buildout in western Kentucky: a phased AI data center campus in Paducah—paired with an energy park designed to handle power spikes from the next wave of AI compute. The plan calls for more than $100B in private investment, targeting full completion by 2032. Once online, it’s expected to support about 8,000 construction jobs and create roughly 600 long-term roles—so this isn’t just infrastructure, it’s workforce momentum too. Why Paducah? The site already has real-world industrial history (it produced enriched uranium in the 1950s), and—more importantly—existing assets: transmission corridors, water systems, fiber connectivity, roads, and large parcels of developable land. That means faster “power-and-data assembly,” not a blank-slate gamble. On the energy side, partners plan up to 2 GW of natural gas generation, major grid upgrades, and up to 2.6 GW of battery storage for peak balancing and reliability. Excess power can be sent back to the grid.
