Amazon just filed with the FCC to launch its Amazon Leo low-Earth-orbit network—and the goal is delightfully bold: “direct-to-device” satellite service. Translation: when regular cell towers can’t reach you (remote regions, disaster zones, or outages), compatible phones could still send voice, texts, data, and emergency communications—without needing extra hardware. Amazon plans to deploy up to 5,105 satellites, starting around 2028, split across five orbital “layers” at roughly 510–580 km altitude. The concept is different from earlier Leo broadband efforts that relied on specialized user antennas (Leo Nano / Pro / Ultra). This time, the pitch is simpler: phones with built-in satellite connectivity chips connect directly to the satellites. To fill coverage gaps, Amazon says it’ll partner with mobile carriers, while also targeting use cases like disaster response, fleet management, remote work, and IoT sensing.
